Barcelona have won the domestic treble of La Liga, Copa del Rey and Supercopa de Espana, meaning Spanish duo Yamal and Pedri are likely to be in contention for this year’s Ballon d’Or, as is Brazil forward Rafinha. However, Dembele is another favourite to win the award, given his success with PSG, particularly the club’s first Champions League triumph.

However, Merino will be hoping to help either Yamal or Pedri win this year’s Ballon d’Or as Spain secure another UEFA Nations League triumph, with the Spanish set to play Dembele’s France in the semi-finals on Thursday, June 5.

‘I hope this award goes to Lamine Yamal and Pedri,’ Merino said. ‘They are players we have in the national team who have done incredibly well this season. They didn’t win the Champions League but they have shown throughout the year that they are at their best.’

‘Hopefully we can win the Nations League and it will give them a boost. We still want to win a trophy to bring home another one and for personal ambitions.’
